Where does this leave Moderate Republicans?

It's hard to believe the McCain team really believes they can poach many Clinton supporters by putting a Pat Buchanan pro-Creationism gun-toting Evangelical on the ticket, but clearly the Palin pick was geared to excite the extreme base.  In that sense, it is far from the maverick pick and is a complete sell-out to the part of the GOP that already has alienated many of the moderate wing who at one time saw McCain as their hope.  We've already seen Jim Leach and Eisenhower's granddaughter endorse Obama.  I wonder what the effect of this pick will have on other bigger names who have been sitting on the fence, names like Hagel, Lugar, Specter, and Colin Powell - people who have a working relationship with Obama already and are big supporters of Joe Biden. Could the desertion of a few of them from the GOP ranks move a couple of swing states into the Obama corner?

Excellent points.  What about the prominent moderates on the fence?  They can't be happy.

Scratch Arlen Specter from that list:

"Sen. McCain has made an unusual and refreshing selection as the vice presidential nominee on the Republican ticket by selecting (Palin). In an era when people are looking for somebody outside of Washington, you can't get any farther away than the state of Alaska," said U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter.

I don't know (2.00 / 1)

In a way, this pick is designed to appeal to moderate suburban Republican and independent women. The calculation is that these women worry a lot about security, and that a woman VP will draw these women into the McCain camp. It's not designed to win the feminist wing of the Hillary people.

This pick is either going to be a big grand slam home run or a big bust. I think we should assume it's going to be a big boom to get the Obama supporters working harder than they have ever before.

Union member Sarah Palin and her husband (United Steelworkers Union member) will be assets for the Republicans in key blue collar swing states like PA, OH, and MI.

Hunters, fishers, and snowmobile racing Palins will be assets in key Western states like Colorado, Nevada, and NM.

I would not underestimate the impact of this choice on the electoral college map.

IMO, best case scenario for the Repubs is draw.   She will certainly lose some voters for McCain due her lack of foreign policy experience.   Age is an issue for McBush, and many people would fear our national security should she take over as POTUS.

I sincerely believe this pick is just a ploy to try and take voters' minds off of the major issues of the campaign.  It is classic Rovian style, in that he will hope the Dems continue to attack Palin, so they can play the sexist card and garner votes in that fashion.

The Obama campaign would do well for itself just letting the media handle the vetting process, and continue to pound home the message of change and  a new direction.

Do not go down the rabbit hole...
